Pet urine is a very complex mixture and there is no full proof formula to eliminate the odor every time. It is a hot acid dye or a low pH dye. When dog or cat urine is left in the carpet and turns into a high pH substance, it acts to neutralize the dyes in your carpet. All you see is urine and not always even that, but when this urine is removed, after being left for too long, it can take much of the carpet dye with it. It can also greatly break down the carpet backing and face fibers. The moral of this story is that is much cheaper to take care of pet problems early than to bury your head in the sand and hope they go away on their own. Pet urine odor can persist for up to five years, so even the most persistent person will eventually give in.
